Using participatory methods to shape an award winning design

Lucas Contino
  • A major consumer health brand wanted to design a new handheld device to add to their line.
  • The challenge was the team had little experience in the category, and as a new-comer, they wanted to differentiate themselves in the market. The brand reputation also necessitated a superb user experience.
  • To tackle these challenges, we utilized a participatory and generative approach, so that end-users would directly shape the design and experience of the device. This ensured high usability as well as creative difference.
  • To do this, we built modular prototypes that allowed participants to change the way it was held, used, and operated in real-time. By experimenting with the prototypes in real-life contexts, our participants arrived to a configuration that worked in real life and solved issues our competitors were not aware of.
  • The team developed the prototypes, testing all the way to production, achieving commercial success and winning both the IF Design and Red Dot design awards (Braun Nasal Aspirator).
